What If It’s Not About Changing the World?

Adventures staff and Race Alum Reid Mason spent 3 months in Greece in early 2016, serving at Refugee Camps. In the face of hard situations and suffering, he asked God a lot of questions. Now, as the Adventures Disaster Relief Manager, he has a new perspective on what it means to change the world. What if it’s not about changing the world?   When I think about changing the world, and the magnitude of the work we do at Adventures, sometimes I tend to freeze. That kind of challenge is thrilling or inspiring to some, but to me it can be overwhelming. The problems of the world are so...

How God is Working in Baton Rouge

When Baton Rouge flooded August 2016, it’s estimated over 40,000 homes were destroyed, over 30,000 residents displaced, and over 20,000 people had to be rescued. At least 48.5% of buildings in the city were damaged by rising water. Baton Rouge resident Steve Wallace tells us of his journey to safety as his home filled with water, and how God provided help for his family through an unlikely source at a time they needed it most.  It’s common for students of culture to reserve some of their harshest criticism for the members of our millennial generation. They’re self-serving,...

How Baton Rouge is Responding to a Record-Breaking Flood

When a catastrophic storm hit Baton Rouge last month, it sunk southern Louisiana in over five feet of water.  Over 40,000 homes have been destroyed, over 30,000 residents were displaced, and over 20,000 people had to be rescued by the Red Cross, Salvation Army, and Louisiana National Guard. The massive scale of this disaster prompted President Obama to declare a state of emergency for the state of Louisiana. It’s estimated a flood of this magnitude happens only once in every 500 years. In the wake of devastation, Adventures staff Reid Mason saw something remarkable. The...

Buried Alive in an Earthquake, God Brought Her Back to Life

While on a short term mission trip to Haiti, Denise Heesch met a little girl who, after being buried alive in the earthquake, was declared dead. Then her mother cried out to God. The beautiful hot Haitian sun shone overhead as we followed our host up the steep, rocky road. We were visiting various families in the local community, praying and talking with whoever we met. We scrambled up and around rebar and rocky, dusty, cinder blocks to walk across a concrete slab. Around the back of the attached cinder block “home” we approached the door on the side and call out, “Bonjour,...

I’ll Never Forget Him: How a Syrian Man Changed My View of Refugees

While on Greece on a short term trip, Adventures Fellow and Race Alum Hannah Midgett met a man she will never forget. It was my last day working in Lesvos, and my first day working at the International Rescue Committee (IRC) transit point. After 2 weeks, I had become very accustomed to receiving refugees and making them feel welcome. Most refugees were timid, yet very thankful. While some kids would open up and play, others would attach themselves to their parents, and start to tear up the moment their parents weren’t in their line of vision. Most would huddle into circles, talking...
