How Hurricane Sandy Helped Prepare Me for the World Race

Breanna Morris is going on the World Race in September 2013 with V Squad. Over Christmas break, Breanna and her father went on an Adventures Relief Trip to help the victims of Hurricane Sandy. Little did she know how much insight and perspective a short-term trip would give her into the epic journey she’ll soon be taking.

"God definitely had big plans for me on that trip, and it was amazing to see how faithful people were to his call,"  Breanna recently wrote of her trip to New Jersey to aid victims of Hurricane Sandy.

“Though only six days long, this trip served as an introduction to Adventures in Missions and gave me a trial run of sleeping on the floor, living in community, working as a volunteer, not showering, and eating a lot of 'white' food” — all everyday occurrences on Brenna's upcoming 11 month journey to 11 countries.

“It confirmed again that I do not, in fact, enjoy sleeping on the floor and keeping my stuff in a giant pile, but that it’s nothing compared to the hundreds of displaced hurricane victims whose possessions are riddled with mold and water damage.”

On her trip to New Jersey, Breanna not only experienced the less glamorous side of missional living, but she experienced the rewarding side as well.

“Had I not gone on this trip, I never would have met the amazing people who came from 14 different states and two places in Canada. There were people from all different backgrounds and denominations, which made praise and worship time interesting – I don’t think there was even one song that every person knew – but it was still so awesome to see everyone join together in our love for the Lord.”

The Lord not only used Breanna as his hands and feet to help those affected by Hurricane Sandy, but he worked in her as well. With fundraising on the back burner, Breanna was not enthusiatic about asking people for financial support. But when she took the time and resources to help those in need right now, when she was faithful to the Lord's present call—to help the victims of Hurricane Sandy—God expanded her sphere of influence.

As she built relationships with the others on her team and the people she was serving, what God was doing in Breanna's own life came up naturally in conversation.

“I shared with a few people my plans to go on the World Race, and everyone was really enthusiastic and encouraging! I’m not used to people knowing what this program is, but since World Race is a program through Adventures in Missions, many of them had at least heard of it before.”

She got some of her first trip donations through people she met and worked with on the Hurricane Sandy Relief trip. It gave her the encouragment and enthusiasm she need to kick off her World Race fundrasing.

“Working on this trip with Adventures in Missions confirmed for me that God is actively working in and through this organization. It was so cool to hear everyone’s testimonies in how the Lord was using the experience to play a larger role in their lives.”
