Missions Photo Contest: Enter and Win!

Who hasn't been on a mission trip and captured a genuine and inspiring "kingdom moment" with the lens of their camera?  At any given moment around the world are thousands of missionaries, hundreds of ministries, and dozens of cameras freezing time and harboring memories of God's love in action.

It's what inspired this photo contest that has ignited a rage of popularity.  For the next few weeks, you can enter your captured moments in the "Kingdom Come" Missions Photo Contest.

Prizes are $3,000 for first place; $1,000 for second; $500 for third; and $250 for fourth and fifth place.  And the top photos will be placed in a coffee table book that will help inspire missions and spread the vision of our world as Christ Jesus sees it.

I have questions re: use on my photos. Will this be a one-time right to publish or are you expecting exclusive rights? Thanks for clearing this up for me. I look forward to entering this contest if it is one-time use and I retain exclusive rights to my photographs.
2 Posted by AIM Staff on 5/27/2009 6:30:12 PM

Not exclusive rights, but we can publish them.
3 Posted by Brittany DiSalvo on 6/1/2009 10:23:45 AM

Do the photos submitted have to have been taken on an AIM base?
4 Posted by David Angel on 6/1/2009 11:24:02 PM

You can publish my pictures where? If you could clarify the agreement that'd be great.
5 Posted by Jacob Maentz on 6/2/2009 2:06:33 AM

I'm looking forward to seeing what images are selected. It seems more and more quality photos are added each day. Thanks for offering such a great contest.
6 Posted by AIM Staff on 6/2/2009 3:29:01 PM

Photos do NOT have to be taken on an AIM base.

Pictures may be republished online, in AIM literature (if relevant), or in publicity pieces. AIM will not sell your pictures and will give you as the photographer credit where possible.

Thanks for all of the interest! We're glad to see so many quality images come in!
7 Posted by Laurie Kroll on 6/3/2009 4:01:06 AM

I am sorry. I am still trying to understand the usage of the photos. Will these photos, perhaps taken within another ministry's mission, be used to promote AIM as if they were taken on an AIM trip...or will they be identified to promote missions in general, giving credit to the ministry the photographer was working with at the time the picture was taken?

Thanks in advance for the clarification.
8 Posted by AIM Staff on 6/3/2009 9:10:11 AM

Good question, Laurie. We won't use the photos in a disingenuous way. We'll use them to generally promote missions, if the photo is relevant. If it's obviously a pic of another type of ministry in which AIM is not involved, we won't use it for promotional purposes; however, we may use it in PR pieces. If so, we'll credit the photographer.

here's a question, if i make the first cut, do i submit new photos for the second round, or do i advance with the photos i first submitted. does that make sense?
10 Posted by John on 6/8/2009 2:28:01 PM

Can the photos be slightly edited? Such as like adjusting the brightness/contrast levels and tones? Or should they only be like raw, unedited photos?
11 Posted by AIM Staff on 6/8/2009 3:54:17 PM

Mandy - if you make it to the second round, you will submit an entire portfolio and be judged on your work as a whole, instead of an individual piece.

John - you can edit the photos.
12 Posted by mandy on 6/8/2009 11:09:36 PM

thanks for the response. but if i make it to the second round I submit an entire portfolio (different from the first round's portfolio)? sorry, i still don't quite understand what you mean.
13 Posted by Brandilyn on 6/9/2009 1:59:19 PM

Can the photos have text on them when submitted as long as we still the original pic on our end?
14 Posted by AIM Staff on 6/9/2009 2:04:15 PM

Mandy - that's correct. In the first round, you are judged on a per-pic basis, but in the second round, you are judged on your overall work.
Brandilyn - It is preferable that the images not have any text on them. The picture should speak for itself.
15 Posted by Jessica on 6/9/2009 10:50:45 PM

Sorry, but one more to clarify Mandy... can we re-enter pics from the first round as a part of our second round portfolio, if they did not make it individually?
16 Posted by Danny Collins on 6/10/2009 6:04:23 AM

After we submit a photo, how long does it take for it to show up on the flickr site? Thanks
17 Posted by AIM Staff on 6/10/2009 3:27:03 PM

Jessica - let me get back to you on that.
Danny - it depends. We just had a large amount of submissions, so that explains the delay. Usually, a few days. Thanks for asking!
18 Posted by seth on 6/10/2009 3:34:48 PM

ABSOLUTELY! Trying to do this thing in a common sense way. We want the best pics.
19 Posted by Karin Fendick on 6/10/2009 6:02:40 PM

I sent in pics for my husband on Monday.. that IS before the deadline.. so even if there not showing up yet, will they be posted in time?
20 Posted by Brandiliyn on 6/13/2009 11:54:18 AM

if you make it to round 2....in the "portfolio" do the pictures need to stay in a certain theme???
21 Posted by AIM Staff on 6/13/2009 1:22:25 PM

Good questions.

Karin - if you sent your pix in before the deadline (June 15), they'll be considered in the contest.

Brandilyn - you don't need to necessarily stay in a certain theme, but if you make it to the next round, we'll let you know more details then.

Thanks for everyone's participation, and good luck in the contest!
22 Posted by Marcy on 6/15/2009 4:39:31 PM

i just submitted a number of photos for myself and two sons. we (along with my husband) are all full-time missionaries to asia and africa. i realize it's the deadline today, i hope they still count as being submitted. we are currently travelling and had a hard time getting internet connection to get things submitted.
23 Posted by Mikaela on 6/15/2009 6:52:48 PM

How do we find out who won? and when will we know?
24 Posted by Mikaela on 6/15/2009 6:53:38 PM

I meant...when will we find out who made it through the first round...not who won.
25 Posted by Blayne on 6/16/2009 11:13:55 AM

Did you guys evaluate ON June 15th or were the photos supposed to be submitted by June 15th?

I submitted all of mine last night but I'm afraid you guys already decided without my submissions...

26 Posted by AIM Staff on 6/17/2009 10:00:46 AM

Thanks to everyone who submitted photos for this contest the judges are currently in the process of selecting the ones that will go on to Round Two and we will be notifying everyone next week about whether they are going on to the next Round.
27 Posted by Danny on 6/19/2009 8:33:24 AM

I have just realized that my pics #'s 1911,1912,1913,1968,1969 emailed at a smaller file size than the original pic. All of my pics were around 3.0 - 3.5MB. I'm not sure if this matters or not.

Thanks
28 Posted by ellen on 6/19/2009 6:22:07 PM

When will people know if their phots made it throught he first round?

Thanks,

ellen

Will your publication come from the digital files submitted here? What about film photographers? I have submitted a few scans of prints I've made in my darkroom, but the original prints are superior to my scans. If a "filmie" goes through to acceptance, would you want prints?

Are those winners the only ones who're moving on to Round 2?
32 Posted by cristina on 7/2/2009 2:31:42 AM

can i still submit some photos for the third round
33 Posted by AIM Staff on 7/6/2009 1:27:28 PM

The winners we announced are the only ones going to the next round. You can always submit photos for next year's contest, once this year's contest is over. Thanks to all who competed!
